The driver of an 18-wheeler was killed after hitting a bridge support and crashing into the Columbia River
On August 31, 2009, an 18-wheeler hauling apples slammed into a bridge support beam before falling into a river below. The fatal accident occurred north of Wenatchee, WA at approximately 5:00 p.m. as an 18-wheeler collided with the support beam of a U.S. 97 bridge. Upon impact, the cab broke free from the trailer and fell into the Columbia River. Divers later recovered the body of a woman, presumed to be the driver of the truck, and have continued to search for any other possible victims.

An 18-wheeler crashed into a passenger car on I-45 in Houston
On August 26, 2009, a cargo truck crashed into the side of a passenger vehicle in Houston. The accident occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m. as the vehicles were traveling northbound on I-45. According to investigators, the 18-wheeler attempted to change lanes to his right when he collided with the driver's side of the passenger vehicle. The 18-wheeler pushed the car for some distance. The car's driver was transported to an area hospital in stable condition. The driver of the truck was not injured.

18-Wheeler tire killed Pedro Garcia of Irving, TX
52-year-old Pedro Garcia was struck by an 18-wheeler tire on August 10, 2009. The accident occurred as Mr. Garcia was working on the side of the highway when a tire broke loose from an 18-wheeler and crashed into him at a high rate of speed. The injuries he sustained later proved to be fatal.

An 18-wheeler hauling diesel fuel overturns
On August 21, 2009, an 18-wheeler hauling diesel fuel overturned. The accident occurred on the southwest side of Shreveport, LA as the 18-wheeler was traveling north of Colquitt. It appears the driver intended to make a left-hand turn onto Harper Road when the truck's wheels slipped off of the roadway and caused the tanker to flip over. Fortunately, the driver of the truck was not injured in the accident and all of the diesel fuel remained in the tanker.

67-year-old Sumiko Imamura killed in 18-wheeler accident
On August 23, 2009, 67-year-old Sumiko Imamura lost her life in a tragic 18-wheeler accident. The fatal accident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. on I-5 near Grapevine, CA as an 18-wheeler was unable to stop and crashed into several vehicles including the vehicle driven by Mrs. Imamura. Upon impact, Imamura's vehicle flipped, ejecting her from it. She died at the scene. Several other motorists were injured in th accident and the runaway truck continued for about two miles before it finally came to a stop.

The Occupational Safety and Health Adminsitration issued a $9,100 related to the death of Brian Cellar
OSHA recently levied a fine of $9,100 in relation to the death of Brian Cellar. The fatal accident occurred on June 12, 2009, near Endicott, NE as Cellar was about to pump liquid asphalt from one parked truck to another when one of the vehicles rolled toward the other, trapping Cellar in between. He suffered massive injuries that proved to be life threatening. OSHA conducted an investigation and determined that the Omaha-based trucking company Wynne Transport Service Inc. had committed OSHA violations in the form of not chocking the wheels and failing to set the parking brake of the truck involved in the accident.

A collision between a train and an 18-wheeler occurred in Port Barre
On August 17, 2009, an 18-wheeler was struck by a train in Port Barre, LA. The trucking accident occurred near the Dixie Storage facility off of U.S. Route 190 when the driver of the 18-wheeler pulled into the path of an oncoming train. The train struck the trailer scattering the truck's 40,000 lb. load of sheet metal. Several rolls of the sheet metal were thrown into the air and landed on nearby vehicles causing significant damage. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the accident. The truck driver has been cited for failure to yield.

18-wheeler spills hazardous chemical on I-10
On August 16, 2009, a section of I-10 westbound was shut down due to spilled cargo from an 18-wheeler. The accident occurred when an 18-wheeler transporting isopropanol developed a leak due to warm temperatures inside truck. The highly flammable chemical spilled onto the roadway. A hazmat crew was called in to clean the substance up and several people were evacuated from the scene due to possible exposure.

Five injured in Chicago 18-wheeler accident
On August 14, 2009, five people were injured in an 18-wheeler accident. The accident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. as the intersection of Cottage Grove Road and 103rd Street in Chicago when an 18-wheeler ran a red light. According to authorities, the driver of the 18-wheeler failed to stop at a red light and T-boned an SUV on its passenger side. The driver of the SUV lost consciousness and the vehicle continued to drive forward. Fortunately, several firefighters were riding in the vehicle behind the SUV and the sprung into action. One of the fire fighters was able to chase the SUV down on foot and bring the vehicle to a stop. All five occupants of the car were transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Six children injured when an 18-wheeler rear-ended a school bus in Rehoboth, MA
On August 14, 2009, six children were injured when a school bus was rear ended by an 18-wheeler. The accident occurred at approximately 9:00 a.m. as the bus was heading to a summer camp in Rehoboth, MA. The bus slowed for another vehicle ahead of it when the 18-wheeler approached from the rear and collided with it. The injured children were transported to an area hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

52-year-old Larry Goodwill and 37-year-old George Center killed in a trucking accident
On August 12, 2009, 37-year-old George Center, of Austin, and 52-year-old Larry Goodwill, of Bastrop, were both killed in a head-on trucking accident. The tragic accident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. as Center's UPS truck had an alleged tire malfunction which caused his truck to swerve across the median and into the path of the 2001 International truck driven by Goodwill. The resulting collision left both men dead at the scene near the 466 mile marker in Bastrop County, Texas.

On August 11, 2009, Travis Wyatt was killed in an accident involving an 18-wheeler in North Richland Hills, Texas. The fatal accident occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m. on Iron Horse Blvd. as the 30-year-old was riding his motorcycle. Two people are killed in a Houston-area 18-wheeler accident
On August 8, 2009, two unidentified motorists lost their lives in an 18-wheeler accident in Rosenberg, TX. The fatal trucking accident occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. as the Saturn driven by the deceased was struck from behind by an 18-wheeler. The Saturn stopped in the left lane of Highway 59 near Loop 540 for reasons not yet determined. It is believed that both drivers died on impact.

A truck carrying ammonia overturned in Houston, Texas
On August 7, 2009, an 18-wheeler transporting the toxic chemical ammonia overturned in Houston, Texas. The accident occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. on the frontage road to Texas 288 as the truck made a right turn. Upon rolling over, the truck landed on a passenger car crushing the front of the car. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and no ammonia leaked out.

Dump truck crashes into 18-Wheeler in Athens, TX
On August 5, 2009, a dump truck rear ended an 18-wheeler near Athens, TX. The accident occurred on Highway 31 in the eastbound lanes as an 18-wheeler was slowing for traffic. Allegedly, the driver of a dump truck failed to slow in time causing the dump truck to rear end the 18-wheeler. The dump truck overturned spilling a load of sand onto the roadway. The mess took several hours to clean up, but, fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the accident.

Sergeant Matthew Davidson nearly struck by 18-wheeler tire
As a trucking accident attorney, bad news a tragedy are something we see on a daily basis, so it's nice when we can report some good news.
In this instance, the good news comes in the form of a close call for Houston-area law enforcement officer Sergeant Matthew Davidson. Davidson responded to a call to assist a motorist who was reluctant to change a flat tire on the Fred Hartman Bridge without the assistance of a police officer. Sergeant Davidson parked his cruiser behind the stranded vehicle to warn oncoming motorists. Moments after the stranded motorist completed his tire change, a runaway 18-wheeler tire shot past the officer missing his body by mere inches. The 200 lb. tire was traveling at approximately 60 mph when it zoomed past Sergeant Davidson, passing cleanly between the officer and the concrete retaining wall of the bridge, all of which was captured on video.
Fortunately, the officer was not injured, save a slight scuff to his weapon and holster. Click here to watch the amazing video footage.

Darryl Hoosier, Anthony Brandon, and his wife Kimberly Brandon of Bedford, Texas were killed in an 18-wheeler accident in Gainesville
On August 3, 2009, 55-year-old Darryl Hoosier of Lafayette, LA and Anthony and Kimberly Brandon of Bedford, TX were killed in an 18-wheeler accident near Gainesville, TX. The fatal accident occurred as the driver of an 18-wheeler allegedly failed to slow his tractor-trailer in time, causing it to slam into several vehicles as he approached a bridge construction site on I-35 just south of the Oklahoma border. According to authorities, the 18-wheeler struck the Brandon's vehicle causing it to explode on impact before it collided with a second vehicle severely injuring 63-year-old Carol Whaley and his wife 61-year-old Linda Whaley of Yalaha, FL, and ultimately crashed into Hoosier's vehicle, forcing into the rear of another 18-wheeler. All three of the deceased died at the scene. Eye witnesses on several news sites have described the carnage of the scene and the frustration of not being able to save the victims. The depictions were chilling.
Another fatal trucking accident occurred at this same scene, and under the same circumstances several weeks ago. That accident claimed the lives of a grandfather and grandson from Fort Worth.

An 18-wheeler overturned in a single-vehicle accident in Shreveport, LA
On July 31, 2009, an 18-wheeler overturned in Shreveport, LA. The single vehicle trucking accident occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. as the truck had a blow out. According to authorities, the truck's passenger-side tire blew out causing the driver to lose control and roll. Fortunately, the truck's cargo did not require a significant cleanup effort and no fuel spilled. The driver of the truck was treated for minor injuries and was not cited by police.
