55-year-old trucker Valerijs Belovs charged with vehicular homicide in January 09 18-wheeler accident

Following a seven-week investigation, authorities have charged 55-year-old trucker Valerijs Belovs with vehicular manslaughter for his involvement in a  18-wheeler accident on January 23, 2008 that claimed the life of 49-year-old David Schreffler.

The accident occurred on I-76 as in Pennsylvania as Belovs 18-wheeler was approached an area of congested traffic. The brakes on Belovs vehicle failed causing him to plow into several vehicles ultimately claiming the life of Mr. Schreffler, a father of three.

During the investigation, authorities discovered that the brakes on Belov's vehicle were, allegedly, in a state of disrepair with three of the ten brake subsystems failing entirely at the time of the accident. It was soon discovered that Belov has been pulled over at least six times since June of 2008 and has even had been placed on "out of service" status four times for both faulty brakes and improper driver log-book compliance. As such, 18 violations have been filed against Belovs while driving the same trailer involved in the crash.

Additionally, Belovs allegedly confessed to authorities that his vehicle was issued an illegally administered inspection sticker which stated that the vehicle was roadworthy.

Belovs, the owner of the truck, and the owner of the shop that issued the inspection sticker have all since been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

39-year-old Benny Hicks killed by hit-and-run 18-wheeler driver

On March 6, 2009 39-year-old Benny Hicks was killed by a hit and run 18-wheeler driver. The accident occurred on I-55 near the Como exit in Panola County, MS. A passing motorist discovered Hick's body along side the highway and called 911. Hicks, a Memphis, TN resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe that Hicks was working on his vehicle on the side of the road when he was struck by an 18-wheeler. Physical evidence at the scene, including a piece of an 18-wheeler tractor's fender, validated that it was a trucking accident. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the accident to come forward. Hicks, is remembered as a rehab counselor who devoted his life to helping those who needed guidance.

18-wheelers may soon be banned in Dallas highway "fast lane"

State lawmakers plan on expanding an experimental ban that would prohibit 18-wheelers are other large vehicles from traveling in the left lane of certain major highways in the Dallas Fort-Worth Area. The law would apply only to stretches of highway where there are three lanes or more traveling in the same direction.

According to state officials, similar laws have succeeded in reducing the number of 18-wheeler accidents in Austin and Houston. Highways affected by the ban would include I-30 and I-20 in the entirety of their span across the Metroplex, a stretch of I-45 from the southern portion of Ellis county to the termination point of I-45 at Highway 75 near downtown Dallas. There is also planned expansion of the ban that would blanket the Metroplex's remaining large highways including I-35E, I-35W, and Highway 75.

Naturally, truck drivers are voicing concern about the measure citing that it will impact their ability to make a living by causing an increase in time between deliveries.

We'd like to hear your thoughts on the issue.
