On July 9, 2008 42-year-old Henry Gutierrez, a 16-year veteran of the El Paso Community College Police Department, was injured when his police motorcycle was struck by an 18-wheeler. The accident occured as the officer was traveling northbound on Loop 375 in El Paso, TX.
The 18-wheeler rear ended the motorcycle throwing Gutierrez some 30 feet before he came to a rest. The motorcycle became lodged under the cab of the 18-wheeler and the driver of the 18-wheeler allegedly attempted to flee the scene. Witnesses state that the driver would have kept going had the motorcycle not lodged under his truck keeping him from escaping.
Office Gutierrez was wearing protective gear at the time of the accident and is expected to survive.
