16-year-old Leticia Avalos injured when 18-wheeler wheeler crashes into mobile home
On July 11, 2008 an 18-wheeler left the roadway and crashed into a mobile home injuring 16-year-old Leticia Avalos
while she was sleeping. The accident occurred as the driver was
traveling south on U.S. 395 near the junction of State Route 208. For
reasons unknown the driver left the roadway after crossing through the
opposite lane of traffic and ultimately crashing into the mobile home.
Avalos and her sister were inside the home sleeping when it was struck
by the truck. Avalos was severely injured while her sister only appears
to have suffered minor injuries.
A note from 18-wheeler accident attorney E. Michael Grossman:
This
is simply tragic. This young girl who has her whole life ahead of her
is now critically injured and possibly to a life altering extent. I
have represented clients who were injured by 18-wheelers from all over
the country and from the way these events have been described by the
news media I would say that it sounds like the driver fell asleep at
the wheel.
This
is very frustrating for me personally. In my 20 years of practicing
18-wheeler accident law I have seen many types of cases but I can't
think of a single example where the victim of the accident was more
innocent than this. She wasn't even on the roadway, rather, she was
sound asleep. Can you imagine the long term pyschological impact that
this accident will have on this young girl? If you can't feel safe at
home in your won bed then how can you ever feel safe at all?
I will keep her and her family members in my prayers. I wish them all the best.
UPDATE!!!
It has been confirmed that Leticia Avalos
has suffered a broken neck as a result of this accident. The state
police have indicated that the driver of the truck may have fallen
asleep at the wheel. Several of Leticia's family members were injured
in the accident as well including 12-year old Miranda Luna.
Additionally, a fund has been setup for the victims of this accident.
Make donations to Bank of America account number 501005883556. Gift cards and
furnishings are also needed.
