Many people will tell you that most 18 wheeler accidents are caused by recklessness on the part of passenger vehicles or other drivers — that 18 wheeler drivers rarely cause accidents. Statistically speaking this may be the case. But a large number of accidents are caused by negligence on the part of the truck driver or the trucking company and when these drivers make mistakes the results are often devastating. There are a surprisingly large number of single-vehicle 18 wheeler accidents. This accident in South Carolina exemplifies this.
On Sunday May 23 a tanker truck carrying ethanol overturned. The accident happened at a turn on Sweetwater road a small one-lane road in Edgefield County SC. On Monday clean up workers from the South Carolina Department of Health and Evironmental Control were still cleaning up the ethanol. According to initial news reports the driver of the tanker truck lost control and overturned. No one was injured in the accident and the truck has since been towed away.
I have been investigating and litigating 18 wheeler accidents for the past 20 years and one of the most difficult challenges a victim faces is convincing a jury that he or she was actually harmed due to a truck drivers negligence. So long as most people believe that truck drivers dont cause accidents people who are actually hurt have a hard time securing the compensation they need. This accident shows that anyone behind the wheel of a vehicle can make a mistake — even professional drivers. But when an 18 wheeler is involved in an accident the results are often devastating.
