Luke Hausmann killed by 18-wheeler

What was thought to be a freak accident now appears to be the tragic culmination of a series of negligent acts.

In January of 2007 Luke Hausmann and his siblings were traveling on I-35 north of
Waco, TX. when an 18-wheeler that was driving in the opposite direction lost two of its wheels. Both wheels from the 18-wheeler were hurled across the median where they struck the driver side door of the car Hausmann was driving killing him instantly.

A trooper who investigated the accident noticed that the two wheels were both in disrepair and it was evident to the trooper that the wheels were unfit for use on the 18-wheeler.

KXXV-TV, a Waco ABC affiliate has conducted some research and has discovered that the driver of the 18-wheeler, David McCann, has received numerous citations in the past few years most of which relate to operating a vehicle that failed to meet safety requirements. Most of the infractions were directly related to the wheels and tires being in poor condition.

In one instance McCann's vehicle was prohibited from further travel and was detained on the side of the road until he could furnish a wheel/ tire that was deemed safe for use on public roads. In another instance a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to comply with the citation.

McCann operates an 18-wheeler for United Truck Lines

A note from E. Michael Grossman:

This is simply appalling. If the allegations against the truck driver are in fact accurate this paints a vivid picture of a truck driver who failed to take the required steps to ensure the safety of other drivers on the road. This is a perfect example of why such regulations are in place. My thoughts are with Luke Hausmann's family.
