Elderly couple hospitalized after being rear-ended by 18-wheeler on I-75
An elderly Florida couple was injured Tuesday morning when an 18-wheeler struck their van on I-75. 75-year-old Arthur Berry, along with 84-year-old Yvonne Berry, were driving their Dodge van on Interstate 75 when they were struck from behind by an 18-wheeler. The van rotated, flipped and slid into a concrete barrier. The tractor trailer jackknifed, and the driver, 52-year-old David Lamar Mobley, received minor injuries. The couple were taken to Shands at the University of Florida, where Arthur is listed in critical condition, and Yvonne, in serious condition. Police say charges may be pending.
When an 18-wheeler collides with another vehicle, the results can be staggering. 18-wheelers are much more massive than other vehicles on the roads. They take longer to stop, take longer to turn, and have large blind spots. Truckers are required to have a much larger insurance policy (generally 50 times the size of regular drivers) because of this greater risk of danger. If you find yourself injured in an accident with a big rig, or any other commercial truck, you should talk to a personal injury attorney.
