Otis Nestbit and Antonio Mujica Killed in Multi 18-Wheeler Accident in Big Spring, Texas
According to the Odessa American Online, two men were killed in a
multi-vehicle accident west of Big Spring, Texas. The accident occurred
around 7:30 p.m. Monday, January 23 when a GMC pickup collided with an
18-wheeler, leaving both in the roadway of Highway 176. Another truck
and an unspecified vehicle stopped at the scene to render aid when a
third 18-wheeler struck the GMC picking, killing the driver of the truck
who stopped and an occupant of another vehicle. 50-year-old Otis Nesbit
and 61-year-old Antonio Mujica were killed in the accident. Tom Jackson
and Robert Jackson, from the GMC pickup, were both injured in the
accident and taken to Lubbock and Odessa hospitals. The driver of the
first truck involved in the accident, Eric Pitino, was taken to Midland
Memorial Hospital. Big Spring Department of Public Safety officials
continue to investigate the accident.
Commentary My
condolences are offered to the victims and their families in the
accident. The news feed does not offer much in the way of a cause for
any of the incidents. Therefore, a large third party investigation is
needed to delve into a number of different liability issues, starting
with the inspection of every vehicle involved. I mention a
separate investigation in almost every one of my blog posts related to
commercial vehicle accidents, as this is one of the few ways in
combating trucking companies. You see, depending on the company that
owns the trucks involved, it is a safe bet to assume that their
attorneys and investigators have already begun a fact-finding mission,
aimed at mitigating liability. Most of the time, these are in-house
employees of the trucking companies, whose job is to defend the
interests of their employer. This interest is typically manifested by
manipulating the company's bottom line, in the form of dollar signs. As
you can imagine, having the first opportunity to view and collect
evidence presents a huge problem for victims seeking compensation.
