Jason Matthew Maines Injured in Wrong-Way Collision with Semi Truck in College Station, Texas

According to WTAW, a teenager was critically injured in a wrong-way collision with an 18-wheeler in College Station, Texas. The wreck occurred around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, December 31 when a sheriff's deputy found 17-year-old Jason Matthew Maines asleep at a green light and tried to awake him. In doing so, the teen went through the intersection and ended up in the wrong lanes of Texas 6 and collided with the semi truck head-on. Maines suffered critical injuries from the accident and was taken to College Station Medical Center. The truck driver was treated and released. The accident remains under investigation.

Update: Jason Maines has passed away due to the injuries he incurred from the accident.

Commentary

The potential causes and ramifications of this accident run the gamut, so let me start by saying I hope the young man fully recovers from the accident. Because the details of a commercial vehicle accident are typically already murky, a third party should inspect the accident scene and both vehicles to make a concrete liability determination.
Rather than speculate about a cause or effect of the accident, I would just like to note that the investigation would be tasked with tracing the young driver's actions prior to the accident. Was he drowsy because of the early morning or were there other reasons? The latter could introduce a third party into a liability assessment, given the proper circumstances. In other words, serious accidents that result in injury require the eyes of a third party for fault determinations, irrespective of a story's one-sided appearance.

What this blog is all about:

As a Texas attorney practicing for 20 years, I have litigated all manner of truck accident and commercial vehicle cases. I use this blog as a place to write opinion / editorial articles on a variety of topics that catch my interest and as a means of sharing news stories relevant to truck accidents. I think the overwhelming majority of people are unaware just how common these types of accidents are and I hope this blog raises awareness to rather serious public safety concerns. However, this blog is simply a means for me to share my opinions.
