According to recent news from Riverhead New York 36-year-old Brian Costello of Mt. Sinai has been killed following an accident that involved a gravel-hauling tractor-trailer and a special needs mini-bus. The fatal trucking accident happened around 3 p.m. on Wednesday April 20 on Sound Avenue. The gravel truck reportedly lost control and sideswiped the minibus from the Maryhaven Center of Hope a center for physically and mentally disabled adults and children based in Port Jefferson that has a Riverhead satellite office. No children were reportedly on the bus at the time of the accident but eight adults on the bus suffered injury four of whom were taken to John T. Mather Hospital and four of whom were taken to Peconic Medical Center. One of these passengers later died due to injuries sustained in the wreck. 54-year-old Robert Converse of Bellport was driving the 2006 Mack truck. 61-year-old Gary Rosset of Ridge was driving the small bus.
In the event that an investigation reveals that the truck driver may bear liability for this tragic accident that caused both the loss of life and injury to multiple people a truck driver and their employer may both bear civil liability for the consequences of the wreck. While other issues mostly unrelated to the driver may have played a role in the accident (a shifting load or bad brakes) such assessments cannot be fully made until the work of a thorough investigation into the accident site has been made. Consequently an independent investigation can be conducted to look further into this tragic accident so that any and all liable parties can be discovered and held fully accountable for their negligent role in this fatal truck accident.
