Unfortunately, even a brief moment of distraction can lead to an accident. This is true for both drivers of passenger vehicles and drivers of commercial vehicles. However, the outcome of such seemingly minimal negligence is often quite drastically different due to the immense variation in weight between passenger vehicles and commercial trucks. For example, passenger vehicles commonly weigh between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds. 18-wheelers can weigh in excess of 80,000 pounds. Consequently, the damage that such vehicles can do can be immense. Furthermore, the heavy weight of such big rigs also causes them to be more difficult to handle in the event that a sudden maneuver must be performed. Consequently, truck drivers bear a heavy burden to provide for both their own safety and the safety of those around them. When a truck driver's negligent behavior contributes to an accident resulting in injury, both the driver and the driver's employer can be held civilly liable for the results of such an accident. When instances of negligence are suspected of contributing to an injury trucking accident, an independent investigation may be pursued in order to fully assess the accident site so that all liable parties can be discovered and held accountable.
